Child Marriage Awareness with UNICEF & Local Partners (2021)

Project Overview

  • Partners: UNICEF & Local Civil Society Organization (Kurdistan Region, Iraq)

  • Role: Lead Motion & Information Designer / Script Collaborator

  • Timeline: 2021

  • Objective: To design an engaging, culturally sensitive motion graphic to raise community awareness about the impacts of child marriage within the region.

🚨 The Challenge:

Communicating Sensitive Local Data

UNICEF and their local partner organization in the Kurdistan region needed to tackle a deeply sensitive, high-stakes human rights issue: child marriage. The core challenges were:

  1. Taboo and Complexity: The original research and policy material contained heavy, academic legal text and shocking demographic data that needed to be communicated without causing defensive alienation in the local community.

  2. Cognitive Overload: Balancing strict sociological facts with a fast-paced video format that had to be accessible to people across varying literacy levels.

💡 The Strategy & Collaboration

To solve this, I didn’t just animate—I worked upstream with the communication teams to restructure the message from the ground up:

  • Script Optimization: I collaborated directly with the team to rephrase and streamline the script. We stripped away dense, academic jargon, replacing it with clear, highly accessible, and empathetic language designed for maximum local impact and vocal pacing.

  • Visual-Text Alignment: We applied strict information design principles to ensure that every spoken word perfectly mapped to a clear visual metaphor on screen. Abstract or sensitive concepts were anchored using minimalist, culturally respectful vector iconography to avoid distraction and maintain absolute focus on the data.

🎨 Design & Execution

I utilized a clean, authoritative color palette and strict visual hierarchy to ensure readability and emotional resonance.

  • Software Used: Adobe Illustrator (Vector Assets), Adobe After Effects (Motion Design).

📈 The Result

The final motion graphic successfully translated a complex, sensitive human rights topic into a clear, highly digestible 1-minute visual narrative. It maintained absolute factual integrity while maximizing community engagement and serving as a vital tool for UNICEF’s local awareness campaign.
